Data Strategy Workshop

for a physician association

Data Strategy

Organizational Audit

A large, national physician association found themselves at a crossroads. They cultivated a valuable data asset of physician workforce information. This asset was a competitive moat for the organization and a source of licensing revenue. It also fed into workflows across the enterprise.

Unsurprisingly, leaders had different ideas about how to best cultivate this resource and use it generate value for members, the medical field, and patients. Conversations about the resource were often scattered and lacked focus; at times, there would be discussion about IT-related issues of missing data fields, while others were focused on long-range strategic questions.

Working within the internal strategic insights unit, we convened the leaders for a 3-hour workshop to determine the pillars and principles for data strategy that would govern the use of this asset. We facilitated the workshop to 1) ensure that no voice dominated and no voice was left out; 2) identify the success metric for the workshop and keep the discussion on track; and 3) surface insights seamlessly into the discussion to support quick decision-making.

As a result, an initial data strategy vision was developed by the leadership team. The workshop also surfaced some fundamental perspective differences among leaders. By better understanding the differences, our insights team surfaced recommendations for win-win scenarios that could continue to support the stewardship of this resource and the growth of the organization.
