FIRST-YEAR MEMBER SPRINT
Know what's pulling new members in
— and what's pushing them away
A focused qualitative study that gives your membership team the honest intelligence to act before renewals are at risk.
IS THIS FOR YOUR ASSOCIATION?
If these sound familiar, your first-year membership experience needs a closer look
Data dashboards aren't getting you closer to understanding which members are at risk of leaving
It’s hard to recognize the signals indicating a first-year member is on the rocks
It’s not entirely clear why members actually join — beyond what they say on the application
You're unsure whether you're delivering real value within the first 30 days
The picture of when membership falls short of expectations is fuzzy
You care about building real relationships with members — not just retention metrics
Your association is ready for the honest truth behind why members lapse
You need reliable ways to invite new members to engage more deeply
deliverables
what you walk away with
Three concrete outputs, ready to take into your membership and marketing planning.
1 - QUICK WINS
Tactical efforts your team can implement in 30-60 days to address gaps identified directly by your first-year members.
2 - RETENTION RECOMMENDATIONS
Evidence-based recommendations for improving the first-year member experience and reducing early lapse risk.
3 - FIRST-YEAR JOURNEY BLUEPRINT
A roadmap for improving the first-year member journey — including the "moments of meaning" that make or break early engagement.
THE PROCESS
How it works
A streamlined qualitative process designed to be low-burden on your team and high-yield for your strategy
1 - KICKOFF
A 60-minute Zoom meeting with you and key stakeholders across membership and marketing. We discuss your current membership onboarding journey, your target audience(s), and your strategic priorities. We build the sampling plan together and core objectives.
2 - KEY QUESTION ITERATION
We develop a recruitment approach and a discussion guide tailored to your members' professional context — with your review and input at each step.
3 - In-DEPTH MEMBER INTERVIEWS
5–7, 1-hour individual in-depth interviews (IDIs) conducted over Zoom, typically including 2–3 first-year members and 2–3 members who renewed after their first year. Conversations are confidential and expertly moderated.
OPTIONAL: Lapsed member add-on: Optionally, include 1–2 members who did not renew after their first year. The honest perspective of lapsed members often surfaces what internal data can't.
4 - ANALYSIS ACROSS FOUR LENSES
Findings are synthesized through four analytical categories: drivers of engagement, barriers and blockers, moments of meaning, and unmet needs.
5 - RECOMMENDATIONS AND WRAP-UP
A summary report containing the Quick Wins, Retention Recommendations, and First Year Journey Blueprint delivered within and presented in a 1-hour stakeholder readout session.
Investment starts at $5,000. Typically completed over 4-6 weeks
WHO IT’s FOR
built for membership and marketing leaders at professional associations
THIS IS A STRONG FIT IF YOU …
Manage member experience or retention at a professional or scientific association or society
Are heading into a renewal cycle and want to get ahead of early lapse
Have dashboards and data but still can’t explain the ‘why’ behind member behavior
Want to bring a concrete story, not just more data points, to leadership
Are open to hearing what’s not working
THIS IS LESS OF A FIT IF YOU…
Are looking for a large-scale quantitative survey, benchmarking study, or comprehensive persona study
Have a decision already made and are looking for validation, not discovery
Believe you have nothing new to learn from first-hand member intelligence
WHY THIS APPROACH
WHY qualitative research — and why now
Dashboards tell you what happened. They don't tell you why [and therefore what you can do about it.]
Face-to-face direct conversation with members clues you into what they were hoping for when they joined, what quietly disappointed them, or what would have made them feel like the membership was worth it.
The first year is when members form their lasting impression of your association. It's also the window where the most is still changeable — before the pattern of low engagement becomes the habit of non-renewal
This first year member refresh is designed to surface the first-year emotional and transactional journey together. Including the hopes members had when joining, the career-impact lens they're using to evaluate value, and the specific moments where the association showed up in a way they needed, or didn't.
The findings are evidence-based, confidential, and delivered with expert analysis. Interpretation in plain language without jargon, without confusing data points, so that you know the next best action to take to minimize risk of non-renewal.
